It’s Setsubun time on February 3rd
before I lived in Japan, itΒ wasn’t observed

It’s basically the “Day before Spring”
Designed to chase away all “evil” beings

To do this, you throw soynuts at people
which is funner now that it’s socially acceptable!

This tradition is called “Mamemaki”
quite literally it’s “bean throwing”

The throweeΒ can even wear a “Demon Mask”
while they’re involved in this important task

Got this cutie from our office lady
It’s a bean cake thingy that was really tasty!

Also saw some Setsu-Buns
Get it? I ALWAYS intend to pun!
